Malpensa is one of the two hubs of Alitalia, the Italian national flag carrier, with over 19,6 million passengers in the year 2005. Malpensa is the most important international airports in Italy, along with Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (Rome) and serves a population of over 15 million people.
Major renovations took place in 1998 and after that many flights were transferred from Linate to Malpensa.
Malpensa International Airport has two terminals, Terminal 1 for commercial traffic and Terminal 2 for charter and low-fares traffic. Terminal 1 at Malpensa is used by most of the major airlines. Only a few flights leave from terminal 2.

Se llama oficialmente Aeroporto Humberto Delgado, llamado así por un general de la Fuerza Aérea portuguesa conocido por fundar TAP Air Portugal y por trabajar para derrocar a la dictadura de Salazar. El volumen de pasajeros ha crecido exponencialmente en el siglo XXI, de menos de 10 millones en 2003 a 20 millones en 2014 y más de 31 millones en 2019. En 2007 se agregó una terminal satelital espartana y se está construyendo un nuevo aeropuerto de relevo en Montijo al otro lado del río. .
El aeropuerto es administrado por ANA Aeroportos de Portugal, una autoridad gubernamental que ha subcontratado la gestión a Vinci Airports, una empresa francesa.
